Donald G. Aronson was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on October 2, 1929. He received his BS in 1951, his MS in 1952, and his PhD in 1956. Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Minnesota, Aronson was a research assistant for Project Whirlwind at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology between 1950 and 1952 and a research assistant in the University of Illinois Digital Computer Laboratory from 1956 to 1957.
